The Simpsons Season 21 Episode 3: The Great Wife Hope

When the men of Springfield start watching MMA competitions called "Ultimate Punch Kick and Choke Championships" (UPKCC), Bart begins to fight in MMA matches in the playground of at school. But Marge sees him and she does not like the violent nature of the entire sport. She and a group of women start to protest outside of the MMA stadium. Marge demands that everyone cease the sport entirely. Chett Englebrit, creator of the sport, agrees with Marge but only if she can fight him and win.

Homer and Carl start training for Marge in boxing from Drederick Tatum, jujitsu from Akira, Greco-Roman wrestling from Mr. Burns, as well as "bullying" from KearneyJimbo, and Dolph (to which they have a punching bag that contains a tied up Martin Prince and Principal Skinner).

Now fully trained, she enters the ring with Englebrit and is knocked to the ground. Bart runs into the stadium to take her place, but is thoroughly thrashed by Englebrit. Marge sees this and effectively beats Englebrit, winning the bet. Marge pulls down the ring's microphone and begins to give a speech of the violent sport. However, everyone has already left the building to watch a drunken brawl in the parking lot.

Bart and Lisa enter the empty ring and decide to settle their lifelong feud, which Lisa easily punches Bart to the ground.

My thoughts:
How many times have I seen it: 3 times.
Billboard Gag: The Leftorium - Next Right. Nice joke. (B+)
Chalkboard Gag: I am not allergic to long division. Boring. (C-)
Couch Gag: The Simpsons chase after the couch as it goes around the world. A little long, but they went to distinct places. (B+)

Storyline:
The story kept my attention. There were some great jokes in there (Barney on the floor, Carl and how he knew Dredrick Tatum, "5, 6. Who's got tix?") that definitely make the episode worth watching again. I liked Ralph as the bell. But it's weird, as there were some jokes that fell flat, but I didn't mind them.

I like the idea of Marge standing up against something and gets points just for recognizing that. Marge was fairly well characterized overall. Homer getting stuck in the seats was a pain gag I could dig. The one with Akira, not so much. The sequencing (the training to get ready for the MMA match) was funny. I'm glad they actually explored those situations as the buildup felt more natural.

About the last scene with Lisa punching Bart, I would say Lisa is pretty athletic. She was the MVP for her hockey team and beat up the bullies (Lisa on Ice), and she has participated in sports like gymnastics (Last Tap Dance of Springfield, Little Girl in the Big Ten) and soccer (Marge Gamer). She can run pretty fast too (Trilogy of Error).

Overall, it's a good but not great episode, but I enjoyed both of the fights (Marge-Englebrit, Bart-Lisa).

My grade: B
